What can I expect in terms of renovation costs in Hungary?

The most difficult part of renovation in Hungary for foreigners in the language barrier in the countryside since most builders and other professionals do not speak English. Our agency has been working with builders, electricians and plumbers who already have the experience of working with foreign clients.  Some of the speak English or German or we can recommend you a translator for the work if there are only Hungarian speakers available for a specific kind of work. Buying a house from via us means that we will support you by providing you with our contacts. We do not accept money from builders for our leads as we try to encourage a healthy competition on the market.

You should know that the local material prices are similar to what you find in Germany, the Netherlands or in Belgium. However, labour costs are much lower of course. The vast majority of builders do not charge an hourly rate but rather give you an offer per project.

Builders, plumbers & electricians usually charge for coming, assessing and calculating costs of a project. This cost is about 20 000 HUF (50 euros) in most cases.

To give you an idea about realistic recent renovation costs:

• A complete renovation of a 100 m2 house from inside including materials and labour costs is between 14 000 – 25 000 euros. Of course, this can vary on lot on your needs, what you are willing to do yourself and there are differences in terms of labour cost too.
• Building a brand-new roof, including all the materials and labour is about 15 000 - 20 000 euros.
